Crossing the bridge

The Tasman bridge connects the Eastern Shore to Hobart. I cross the bridge a couple of times a week, but so far always in a car (or in a bus before I got my little red car). Today I crossed the bridge on foot!
It took close to 20 minutes to walk over the bridge on the narrom walk/cycle path. Once on the other side we had to wait for a large ship to pass under it before we (and all the cars) were allowed to continue.
In the 1970s a ship crashed into the bridge and a portion of the bridge fell into the Derwent river.
12 people were killed and the Eastern Shore was "isolated" from Hobart, instead of crossing the bridge the drive to Hobart was 90 minutes!
The bridge was reopened almost 3 years later. Wikipedia has more information.
Because most schools and shops were on the Hobart side of the river, the Eastern  shore side got a kickstart in development. Including the only vet clinic on that side of the river.... my workplace! My boss told me that the clinic building almost doubled in size during that time and we are still working in those buildings.
