I have not met many Norwegians down here.
Only 2 people actually.
The first time was when i was buying my new phone and I was quite shocked when the man serving me said he was from Norway. I have not talked to him since, but I thought I may see if he knows of any plans for May 17th (Norwegian National Day).
The second Norwegian person I met was at floorball practice. She is from Bergen, but has lived in Scotland most of her life. Very random meeting!
We do have some clients who have been to Norway, and they always get very chatty when we continue talking about holidays.
Yesterday I vaccinated an old dog owned by an even older man. Turns out he was born in Edinburgh in the 30s or 40s, lived in Costorphine and moved down to Tasmania in 1947. Except for his scottish last name noone could tell he was Scottish.
I'm still waiting to meet the cats called Oslo and Bergen. Not sure if the owners are Norwegian, but I'm interrested in hearing the story.
This post was inspired by a film I watched last night.
I was about to go to bed when I felt like I should keep watching the film that was starting. And surprise, surprise..... I recognised Kristoffer Joner! The film was the Norwegian film Naboer (Next door). And of course I had to watch it!
Tasmania (and especially Hobart) has been a starting point for a lot of expeditions to the South Pole.
Roald Amundsen stayed in Hobart for over a week when he returned from the South Pole. In 1912 he was in charge of the expedition which reached the South Pole first.
There is a Scandinavian society in Hobart, but it is very different from the Scandinavian society I know from Edinburgh. Here the members are mostly older people who emigrated to Australia when they were young. I believe the society is not as active as it once was.

Today I am studying maps. To make sure I do not get lost on my way to the north of Tasmania for my surgery conference tomorrow.
